At St Mary’s, we are committed to ensuring the effective delivery of a music curriculum that is ambitious and accessible to all our children. We aim to enable our children to use the universal language of music to make the best of the talents God gave them in a variety of contexts. Music reflects our culture and society and we believe that the effective teaching and learning of music enables children to better understand the world they live in.

Our aim is to promote enthusiasm for and enjoyment of music in all its forms and to develop musical skills and knowledge. By engaging children in musical experiences, we can offer them opportunities to develop skills, attitudes and attributes that can support learning in other areas as well as developing life skills such as listening, performing, the ability to concentrate, creativity, self-confidence and a sensitivity towards others. All children are taught to sing by a qualified singing teacher who is a music specialist from EYFS to Year 6.

Children have opportunities to appraise and listen to a wide range of music across several genres. Children also have opportunities to learn musical instruments including the guitar and the violin. Children at St Mary’s love to sing, perform and create music, and in doing so gain musical skills that they can apply through further education and into adulthood.

We love to sing and perform to a high standard at regular events throughout the school year including Masses in church and school, EYFS and KS1 Nativities, Junior Carol Concerts, Y3 and Y4 Easter Cantata and Y5 and Y6 summer production. The whole school joins together once a week in our ‘Prayer through Song’ hymn practises where our older children help the younger ones learn the words and actions. Our School Choir meet once a week and have performed alongside Bolton Symphony Orchestra and at different events with other schools. We even have a staff choir that sing at school events – we love Music at St Mary’s!
