What is SMSC?

SMSC stands for spiritual, moral, social and cultural – and at St Mary’s we weave these ideals through all areas of our curriculum to grow child in every way possible. SMSC is essential for children and young people’s individual development.

These are ways we enhance our curriculum with SMSC:

Spiritual:  Expanding experience of self and life – learning about whom they are and their connection to God. Teaching children that they are connected to God, and that He loves us no matter what, is fundamental to our faith and enables children to recognise that we are all God’s children as such have been created as loving beings.

Exploring and being reflective about their beliefs, from other religions; respecting other faiths and beliefs, exploring our own emotions; consider others and the planet we live one; using their imaginations and exploring their own thoughts; self-reflection and how to improve themselves.

Moral: Because of what we believe about the purpose and meaning of life we live by principles and codes which guide our choices between right and wrong. Care for everyone and everything within our environment; care for the nature around themselves; consider how their actions can impact others or our world; respect other people’s opinions and thoughts; consider how past decisions can affect our current world.

Social: Our way of relating to self and others which is influenced by our spirituality and our morality. practise speaking and listening skills; teamwork skills and leadership; building their confidence and oracy; considering other people’s ideas and thoughts; understanding how society has changed through the years; opportunities to volunteer; engage with the fundamental values of British democracy.

Cultural: The ways in which we do things – the rites, rituals, customs and practices which develop over time with communities. Culture gives expression to a community’s spiritually, morality and social values. We recognise, discover, respect appreciate different cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain’s parliamentary system and the systems in other countries; participate in different cultural events – both Catholic and non-Catholic; understand and respect the cultural diversity in our world; understand how
